The Importance of Communication: Why Ghosting Hurts More Than You Think

In the wedding industry, the importance of communication is everything. From the first inquiry to the final delivery of a film, the relationship between couples and their vendors thrives on clarity, respect, and trust. As a wedding videography team, we pour our hearts into every message, timeline, and creative detail. We understand how overwhelming wedding planning can be — you’re juggling a dozen decisions at once, each one important. But there’s one small act that makes an enormous difference to vendors like us: communication.
Lately, we’ve noticed a growing trend in the wedding industry that’s been difficult for many small businesses — couples reaching out, showing genuine interest in booking, and then completely disappearing without a word. It’s called “ghosting,” and while it might feel harmless in the moment, it can actually have a significant impact on small creative businesses like ours. When you inquire with us about your date, we get excited! We check our calendars, block off your date in anticipation, and often pause conversations with other couples who inquire about that same weekend — all because we want to give you first priority.
When communication suddenly stops, we’re left in limbo. Do we hold your date and hope you’re still interested? Or do we open it back up and risk losing your business if you circle back later? Every wedding date represents not just a day on the calendar, but an opportunity to serve a couple, create something beautiful, and support our families through the work we love. That uncertainty can be emotionally and financially draining for small creative businesses who depend on a limited number of weddings each year.
We completely understand that things change — budgets shift, timelines evolve, or you may find another vendor who’s a better fit for your style or vision. And that’s okay! We genuinely want every couple to find the perfect match for their big day, even if that’s not us. All we ask for is a quick message letting us know your plans. A simple “We’ve decided to go a different direction” or “We found another videographer” goes such a long way. It allows us to open that date for another couple who may be eagerly waiting, and it shows mutual respect in a professional and kind way.
As wedding professionals, we know how much heart goes into planning your celebration — and we also know that communication is what keeps everything flowing smoothly. It’s what builds trust, creates a positive experience, and ensures that your team of vendors can deliver their best work for you. When you communicate openly with your vendors, you’re not just being courteous; you’re setting the tone for a stress-free and enjoyable wedding experience.
So to all the engaged couples out there: if you’ve inquired with a vendor and later changed your mind, please don’t feel bad about saying so. You won’t offend us — in fact, we’ll be grateful. Your honesty allows us to serve others better and keeps our calendars running smoothly. At the end of the day, wedding planning should be filled with joy, connection, and collaboration — and that all begins with communication.
With Love,
